TUCSON -- School supplies are essential for kids to learn and succeed but budget cuts have most of our districts falling short.

We teamed up with the Tucson Association of Realtors to get everything our kids need with our News 4 Tucson Kristi's Kids School Supplies Drive.

It turns out supplies aren't just needed in the classrooms.

"Definitely see lots of headaches and stomach aches of course. Flu season ramps all of that up," says Jody Disney, Director of Health and Wellness for Sunnyside Schools

She says they go through literally thousands of ice packs for our minor injuries each year.

There are 18,000 kids attending school in the district. Most qualify for reduced or free lunches.

Juvenile diabetes is on the rise so teachers need juice boxes and crackers on-hand.

"Quick resources for carbohydrates or sugars," says Disney.

Fourteen percent of all Sunnyside kids suffer from asthma so nurses need to be equipped in case there's an attack.

The yearly budget for the nurses' office works out to be less than a dollar at $0.84 per student.

"All of the things that we use as nurses additionally are a big issue because our budget is constrained. There's no flexibility in our budget."

Sunnyside schools need the basics as well such as paper, pencils and pens. But, the next time you're in Walgreens you might also grab a box of Band-Aids and some juice.
