PHOENIX - A bill that would put Epi Pens in every school, for any child with an anaphylactic reaction, has cleared two Senate committees in Phoenix. The next stop is a house committee.

Right now, in the Tucson Unified School District, nurses keep a vial of epinephrine. When a child goes into anaphylactic shock, the proper amount (based on the weight of the child) is drawn and injected. The problem is, only the nurse can administer the shot and it takes several minutes to complete the process. With an Epi Pen, for general use, the injection is given in a fraction of that time.

Many children already know they have life-threatening allergies. Those kids have an Epi Pen, with their doctor's permission slip, already at the nurse's office or in their backpack. For them, this legislation wouldn't make much of a difference.

It's the 1-out-of-5 kids, who have their first anaphylactic reaction at school, who would benefit. For many of those children, the allergy wasn't known and no Epi Pen is available. Allergic reactions can be triggered by certain foods, medications, insect bites, etc.
