TUCSON- Blood cancer survival rates are increasing thanks to groups like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society raising money for investing and assisting families. But, with 2,000 more Arizonans diagnosed every year, funds are always needed.
When Amber Fernandez was diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer her family was shocked.
"She was a healthy young girl. She had no signs of sickness. We really had no idea," said Amber's aunt, Natalie Fernandez.
It was a tough go for the entire Fernandez family. For 12 months she underwent treatment including a bone marrow transplant from a little boy named Benjamin.
"We call little Benjamin 'Superman' because he was the five year old little brother who was a 100 percent perfect match for Amber and really saved her life."
Amber is 18 months cancer free living the normal life of a nine year old. A decade ago a cure for her blood cancer seemed unthinkable. That's why the leukemia and lymphoma society continue putting on events like Light the Night Walk sponsored by UAMC Diamond Children's Center.
"It is a really casual family friendly event where we will have 2,000 people plus out there to celebrate and commemorate those lives that have been affected by a blood cancer."
The Fernandez family started the "Fernandez Family Benefit Concert" in 2011 when Amber was diagnosed. Since she has beat cancer she will join the benefit concert in person this Friday at Casa Vicente. The Light the Night Walk will be on October 5th at Reid Park.
