A Mexican national is fighting for their life in a Tucson hospital after suffering a violent crime on the Tohono O'Odham Reservation.

Customs and Border Protection says agents from the Casa Grande station found the victim Tuesday, March 12 just after midnight near Vamori. The village is located approximately nine miles north of the international border.

The agency will not say whether the victim is a man or woman. The victim reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries and had a laceration to the throat.

Kat Rodriguez from Derechos Humanos, an immigrant rights group, monitors incidents along the border that involve illegal immigrants and said she was not aware of the attack, "it wouldn't be completely unusual considering some of the violence that happens on the border which is overall fairly rare, but it still happens.

News of the incident came as a shock to Ruben Norris who has lived in the village of Vamori for the last six years, "yeah, it's kind of scary because we're not that far from the border." Norris also said, "it's a village, it's quiet. We really don't hear nothing. Yeah, it's safe."

A statement from Customs and Border Protection said the Tohono O'Odham Police Department had been advised of the incident. On Tuesday the chief of police said he had not comment on the case.
