TUCSON - The mother of a teen who was killed in a car accident wants other young drivers to take their privileges seriously.

Cathi Pike went to a memorial service for her daughter, Julia Good, Sunday afternoon.

"I don't know why she was driving too fast down the road," Pike said, "but it's going to help me at some point in the future to try to help other kids never to do this."

The 16-year-old was spending the night at a friend's house on January 19, according to Pike.

"They were bored," Pike said, "and at midnight, they decided it might be fun to go for a ride."

Good was driving with two friends as passengers. She rolled her car on Ina Road west of Wade Road. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Both friends had minor injuries, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Before the accident, Arizona Senator Steve Farley proposed changing laws for new drivers.

Currently, drivers under 18 start with a graduated driver license. Without a guardian, they are not allowed to drive after midnight unless it is because of work, school or an emergency. They are allowed 1 underage passenger, except siblings. That lasts 6 months.

Farley thinks the restricted license period should be longer than 6 months. He also wants restricted licenses to apply to drivers of all ages.

"We spend so much of our time on the road as Americans," he said. "I think that it's a vitally important thing to try to make our roads as safe as possible, so that we don't endanger ourselves or others."

Cathi Pike likes the restricted license system.

"I've believed that all along," she said. "Forever. Not just since this happened."

She is looking for an organization to volunteer with. She wants to tell her daughter's story to other new drivers.

She also had a message to their parents.

"Please, always tell your children, every day, every night," Pike said, "how much you love them and how proud you are of them."
