Posted 11:31 PM 7/5/2013 : Monsoon storm leaves trail of damage, power outages
TUCSON - As Friday's monsoon storm pushed through Tucson, it left a trail of destruction, downed trees and toppled power lines throughout the metro area.
"We have something on the order of two dozen poles that were either blown down or otherwise damaged that will need to be replaced," said Joe Barrios, a spokesman for Tucson Electric Power.
The damage from the storm caused power outages scattered on all sides of Tucson. However, especially powerful winds did a fair amount of damage on Valencia just north of Tucson International Airport.
"I came out. It was blowing the trees out of the ground and I looked over and the telephone poles were hitting the pavement," said Robert Durazzo, a resident of the south side neighborhood impacted by the storm.
At one point more than 8,000 customers were without power. TEP crews raced to restore service, restoring power to many folks. As of late Friday night, only 1,100 customers were affected by the power outage.
Barrios said while crews plan to work throughout the night to restore service, it could take several days to make all the necessary repairs.
"Given the amount of damage that we're seeing, and how widespread it is, it's going to be several days before we'll be able to complete the repairs," Barrios said.
Law enforcement also anticipates Valencia to remain closed to traffic from Nogales Highway to Campbell Avenue throughout the night.
