Posted 6:42 AM 11/29/2012 : Pima Co. One-Stop helps train Tucson father for career in aviation
TUCSON- You could say Frank Bolek is "waiting in the wings".
After working 10 years as an electrician, the father of two lost his job and needed a new career. "I'm not going to lie, it has been difficult trying to get everything together," Bolek says.
He turned to the Pima County One-Stop for help.
It covers the costs for certificate training in Machine Tool Technology, Green Automotive Mechanics, Advanced Aviation Technology, Logistics and Supply Chain Management and Information Technology. "This is a move to get people into specific training because local employers have identified they need trained personnel in these fields." says Sue Denogean of the Pima County One-Stop.
Bolek is training five days a week in Pima Community College's Aviation Technology program, hoping to become an aircraft mechanic.
He's one of six job seekers training there right now thanks to the One-Stop. "It's not just book work," Bolek says. "You actually get on the plane, you take parts off the plane, and you overhaul engines."
The One-Stop has allocated $125,000 for the training program. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, a valid Arizona's driver's license, and 12th grade math ability. Most opportunities will also require five years' verifiable work history, a drug test and a criminal background check.
Priority will be given to dislocated workers, veterans and their eligible spouses.
