TUCSON - An injured pit bull used as a "bait dog" in dog fighting has been rescued in the most unusual way, and it's a story you'll see only on News 4 Tucson.
A woman saw a listing on Craig'slist saying, "Found pit bull with recent leg cut off."
The Good Samaritan and dog lover saw it and met the people who found the dog, and the took the animal to Acacia Animal Hospital where he is being nursed back to health.
The dog was bred for fighting, and now he's fighting for his life. Ten days ago, Dr. Marc Laudonio says he was half his weight, had multiple fractures, and had 6 to 7 gun pellets in him. He's missing a foot and it wasn't surgically removed. Dr. Laudonio, who owns Acacia Animal Hospital, says, "There is a belief that leg had been mauled so severely that it was just flopping around, that someone cut it off."
Today, 'Chocolate Boy' as he's called, has gained four pounds and is getting stronger. Mary is the Good Samaritan who brought him to Acacia Animal hospital and visits him daily. "I gave it my all, and I think he's going to give it his all right now just to fight to survive to have a great life and be a wonderful pet to a great family," she says.
Brendan De Smet works at Acacia Animal hospital. He says the dog has suffered physically and emotionally, but his spirit remains intact. "Now it's our job to make sure good medicine is practiced, then we'll have good people offering foster care, and then have a great person giving him a forever home."
Detective Robin Crehan is with the Pima County Sheriff's Department. She's now building her case against the people responsible. "Dog fighting is extremely concealed - it's understood by people who fight dogs that we're looking for them and they go to great lengths to make sure they're not discovered, if at all possible."
So with the help of the hospital, 'Chocolate Boy' will recover from his toughest fight.
