TUCSON-Police are looking for a man they say tried to abduct a woman over the weekend.

It happened near the University of Arizona.

Police tell News 4 Tucson the woman first spotted the suspect at the intersection of University Blvd. and 3rd Avenue on Sunday.

He asked for directions then tried to lure her into his SUV.

She said no and kept walking.

When that didn't work, he caught up to her at the next intersection on foot--grabbed her and tried to run off with her.

When she screamed, he dropped her and ran away.

Marie Rodriguez walks in this area on a daily basis.

"Usually everything has been fine. I haven't had any shady moments, but there's always that paranoia. You always watch over your shoulder," said Rodriguez.

"It's a little nerve wracking. I only live a couple blocks from here, said Michelle Conner.

Tucson police can't remember the last time they responded to a call like this.

"It's very rare especially for something like this to happen in broad daylight. It's extremely rare," said Sgt. Chris Widmer.

Rodriguez said she's never had a run-in like that before but has seen people that don't belong, hanging around near campus.

"Especially whenever school first started you could tell there were a lot of shady characters," said Rodriguez.

To prevent becoming a victim, police recommend making sure you're aware of your surroundings and call 911 when you see something suspicious.

"I'll probably keep an extra lookout but there's no avoiding having to come through here everyday," said Rodriguez.

The suspect is described as 30- 40 years old, about 5'8" tall and medium build with graying black hair, blur eyes and an unkempt beard.

He was last seen wearing a black leather jacket with brown stripes on the sleeves and faded blue jeans.

He was driving a white 1990's model Sport Utility Vehicle.

If you have any information, call 911 or 88-CRIME.
