Posted 5:47 PM 8/31/2013 : Protestors in Tucson speak out against possible attack on Syria
TUCSON-Crowds of anti-war demonstrators gathered across several cities Saturday calling for the U.S. not to intervene militarily in Syria.
In Tucson, they held signs and chanted near Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
As president Obama seeks Congressional approval for military action in Syria, protestors lined the streets in Tucson asking the U.S. to stay out of this conflict.
"Launching missiles at people is not a solution," said protestor Dylan Boswell.
Boswell was one of about a dozen people who took the streets in front of the base to protest the possible attack.
"Syria...it's horrible. I mean hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives there, and it's terrible. But it's only going to be worse if we bomb Syria and let the rebels take over," said protestor Berlin Johnson.
But Leila Hudson, the University of Arizona's assistant professor of Middle East and African studies said if targeted well enough, the U.S. can cripple President Bashar al-Assad's regime and send a strong message.
"There is vital U.S. credibility with Obama having laid down a red line. All of which would push for this intervention," said Hudson.
"It really seems like he's just doing that to save face to say, 'they crossed the red line, so now we've got to blow something up.' It just doesn't make any sense," said Boswell.
But Hudson said if the U.S. doesn't take action, "dictators, terrorists around the world will realize that there is no enforcement behind the international norms against the use of weapons of mass destruction," she said.
Lawmakers are expected to take on this issue of attacking Syria when they get back from their break on September 9.
