Posted 7:33 PM 9/9/2013 : Rain creates muddy mess for residents along Houghton Rd.
TUCSON- Hours of light rain caused a lot of problems for residents on the east side Monday, particularly people who live along Houghton Road.
Neighborhoods on the east side of the road, such as Mesquite Ranch and Civano were hit hard by July storms. Neighbors blamed the construction along the Houghton Road Corridor.
Now as construction continues, each neighborhood entrance consists of a a dirt road. When it rains that road becomes a muddy mess. "It gets washed up and full of water, so it's very slow to try and get in and out, unless you really want to give your tires a work out," says Civano Resident Lora Rudolph.
Unfortunately the dirt roads aren't the only problem. "It's extremely scarey because you never know what's about to happen," Susan Sasiadek says.
Sasiadek lives in Mesquite Ranch. Her home didn't have any water damage in July, but as a precaution she put down sand bags infront of her house. "I mean if I go out for dinner and we have a monsoon come in, am I going to be stuck having to find a place to spend the night? Are my animals going to be left alone?" Sasiadek says. "It's a very scary thought."
The Tucson Department of Transportation says it is listening to concerns from neighbors. In fact, everyday crews lay down small chunks of asphalt in the dirt, to prevent major flooding.
The Houghton Road Corridor Project is scheduled to wrap up in December. There will be more work for the next year as crews add landscaping and art along the corridor.
