Posted 10:15 PM 2/11/2013 : Sunnyside schools officials blame voters for painful budget cuts
Tucson - Because of the failure of Proposition 412 back in November, the Sunnyside School District now faces the decision of where to cut millions from their budget.
On Monday night district officials and it's governing board met to discuss where to trim up to $4.6 million dollars from the 2013-2014 budget.
Recommended cuts by Sunyside School District Superintendent, Manuel Isquerdo, and his budget advisors could cost the district at least 170 temporary teachers along with school counselors, several library positions, and the entire elementary physical education program. Larger class sizes at every grade level are most likely be necessary as well.
They made it clear it was voters' decision to reject Proposition 421 that led them to this budget crisis.
Linda Valazquez, a teacher at the Ocotillo Early Learning Center says cutting programs that help students will also dramatically impact their families, "They totally depend on programs. The (Ocotillo)program is basically free to them, we have a pay program where people can pay but the vast number that come to our school come on a free lunch program"
The public was not allowed to address the board at the meeting but they will be given that opportunity at another public meeting scheduled for Tuesday night. The governing board is expected to vote on the recommended cuts at the meeting as well.
The meeting is currently scheduled to be held at the Sunnyside School District Governing Board headquarters at 2238 E. Ginter Road at 6:30 pm.
