TUCSON-Some Tucsonans and visitors spent the morning outdoors hiking and staying active doing things that some of the January 8 shooting victims enjoyed.

January 8th shooting survivor Suzi Hileman isn't ready for a hike, but she can handle this "Stroll and Roll" at the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial River Park.

"A year ago, I could only get a hundred yards down the path. Last weekend, I walked the whole path," said Hileman.

The event is to encourage the community to come together and get outdoors while honoring the January 8 shooting victims.

"We are just here to honor the things that people have gone through because of it," said Sharon King who is visiting from Canada.

Hileman said it's an event that Christina-Taylor would have loved.

"This is something that we would have done together that our families would have done together, and she's here. I hope she's proud of me," said Hileman.

Hileman was nine-year-old Christina-Taylor Green's neighbor and friend.

"I got up drove to my girlfriend's house, picked up her daughter and a civics lesson turned into a nightmare," said Hileman.

She took three bullets on January 8, 2011 while trying to protect Christina-Taylor at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' "Congress on Your Corner" event.

"Christina's with me all the time, but as her dad says every time he's asked. She does not want us to be sad. She's standing right here with her hands on her hips and her eyes flashing going 'enough already,'" said Hileman.

That image encourages Hileman to go on all the while mentoring other kids.

January 8 victim Gabe Zimmerman's mother was out at another event.

She said she thinks Gabe would be proud.

"I think it's a terrific way to celebrate Tucson and to celebrate community recovery from a terrible event," said Emily Nottingham.

Sunday there will be an interfaith prayer service at 3:30 p.m. at St. Agustine Cathedral located on 192 S. Stone Avenue.  The public is invited.
