Posted 9:34 PM 1/9/2013 : Tucson prepares for cold snap
TUCSON - Tucsonans are trying to prevent cold weather damage.
The Saturday morning forecast is only in the 20s. The hard freeze is expected to repeat the next few nights after that.
Rita Ranch had some serious problems from a streak of cold weather 2 years ago.
Most of the community lost gas so they did not have heat or hot water. Pipes froze and burst all over the area.
Bradly Hogue replaced the insulation on his outside pipes Wednesday evening. It cost about $20.
"Much, much more economical to replace it yourself than have a plumber come in at whatever they charge per hour," he said.
Armando Bracamonte was covering his citrus trees. He almost lost one of them 2 winters ago.
"I don't want to go through that again. I know what it will do to them," Bracamonte said. "I guess you can say it's the fruits of my hard work."
He has lived in the area since 1996. The multi-night freeze of 2011 taught him a lesson.
"2 years ago was the worst it's ever been," he said, "cold, very cold."
