Posted 8:03 AM 4/11/2013 : Tucsonan sews more than 27,000 blankets for sick children
TUCSON- Whoever said chicken soup is the cure for sick children has never met Meme Geoga.
The 87-year-old has been sewing all her life.
Seventeen years ago she started stitching blankets for sick children. Each one is hand-made. "As soon as you give a baby a blanket, they put it right to their face and that's what it's all about," Geoga says.
On any given day Meme will sew a dozen blankets. She uses all sorts of colorful fabrics and lines each one with silk. "They're satin and soft," Geoga says.
She decided to start donating her blankets to children in the hospital, after she herself spent time in the hospital for two open heart surgeries. "I was just so grateful for all the things done for me," Geoga says.
"They usually come in handled brown bags and it's like Christmas morning," says Lori Throne.
Throne works at Diamond Children's. She says Geoga has probably donated hundreds of blankets to the hospital and every time a new delivery is dropped off, the nurses playfully fight over them. "There's something about a baby or a small child just not being on white blankets and pillows," Throne says. "I think it gives their families hope that they will get better."
Geoga doesn't just donate her blankets in Tucson, but to hospitals across the country. "They've been to many places," Geoga says.
She says she'll continue stitching together the blankets for as long as she can.
They are truly a labor of love that can wrap around any heart. "It's universal," Geoga says.
