TUCSON - Campus Police are warning students on the University of Arizona campus to be on high alert.

Two separate muggings have been reported within a one week span.

The first happened January 29, the victim was jumped in a campus parking lot near 4th Street and Highland Avenue.

The second incident happened Tuesday night. Two men mugged a student as he walked near the Marley building on 4th street.

The student suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Police don't believe the incidents are related but they do have similarities: the victims, both men were walking alone around 10 o'clock at night.

Student Sarah Sullivan says, "It scares me just because I'm a girl, so if guys are getting assaulted."

"Yes you never really hear about stories with guys, but it obviously does happen," says student Cali Nash.

Two muggings in one weeks time has students walking in pairs.

Sergeant Juan Alvarez says that's a good idea, "regardless if you're male or female they look for people who are not paying attention, not as sure of their surroundings it gives them an advantage."

He says last Tuesday a young man walking through a campus parking lot was mugged by a Hispanic man.

"Who he described approximately 5'6 with curly hair, dark clothing. This person forcible took his property from him," says Sergeant Alvarez.

A week later it happened again, two blocks away on campus. This time, a student was roughed up suffering minor injuries.

"In this incident he was approached by two males, dark skinned, 6 feet tall, and they both were wearing dark colored track suits with a red stripe running down the leg," says Sergeant Alvarez.

No weapons were used. Sergeant Alvarez urges students and faculty to use Safe Ride, a safe and free way to travel on campus at night.

"I've taken it from the dorms over here, to the dorms over there, and it comes within 15 minutes," says Nash.

Sullivan says, "I guess guys have to do the same things as girls do, just take safe ride and be careful where you go."

If you have any information that could lead to the suspects call Campus Police or 88-crime.

Here are some additional campus safety tips from UAPD:

Remain alert and aware of your surroundings, and the people around in your at all times.

At night, travel in groups through well-lighted areas. Avoid shortcuts through dark or deserted areas.

Stay off the phone. Electronic devices divert your attention from potential trouble.
