TUCSON - Fall semester at The University of Arizona is about to get underway and students are already on high alert.
Police issued a warning Thursday, after arresting a man earlier in the week.
It happened Monday night near First Street and Mountain Avenue.
UAPD says two girls were walking home to their sorority, when a man approached them and started asking them questions which made them uncomfortable. The girls went inside, but later the man showed up at their door, asking if they "wanted to hang out". The girls responded with a "no," closed the door and called police.
UAPD officers arrested 24-year-old Gabriel Herrera for loitering and criminal trespassing.
"It is scary to know that somebody can just walk in here and do whatever they want," says UA Senior Fernanda Garcia.
Sgt. Filbert Barerra says this isn't Herrera's first suspicious incident on campus. Reports show he has been arrested twice so far this year. In one case UAPD says he was looking through the window of one sorority.
Herrera has an active exclusionary order which prohibits him from being on any properties owned, leased, rented or controlled by the UA. The only problem is he isn't listening. "Unfortunately the fact that we exclude someone from campus doesn't prevent them from returning," Barrera says. "But it gives us the ability to arrest them for trespassing."
Sgt. Barrera says with school set to start again, the incident is a reminder for everyone on campus to be alert. "I carry pepper spray and usually if I'm walking alone I call someone," says UA Sophomore Carly Monson.
Sgt. Barrera says new students especially should get to know the campus and familiarize themselves with the blue emergency lights. When you press the button a 911 call immediately goes to the UAPD station.
Herrera has black hair and brown eyes. He is 5'10" tall and weighs 165 lbs.
As of Wednesday night he remained in the Pima County Jail on a $250 bond.
UA Police are asking anyone that may see Herrera on any University of Arizona properties in the future to please call them by dialing 911.
