TUCSON - Streetcar construction has made back-to-school traffic worse than usual.
"It's just really frustrating," University of Arizona sophomore Francisco Orozco said. "It wastes a lot of time, but I guess it's necessary."
UA Police were conducting vehicle and pedestrian traffic Wednesday afternoon.
A stretch of Second Street is closed in the middle of campus. The Highland pedestrian path is closed. A lane of Speedway is also barricaded.
"I would describe it as a place where you don't want to be," Arizona junior, Mitchell Gonzalez said. "You have to get here 30 minutes early."
Campus officials recommend avoiding Mountain Avenue by using Park or Cherry Avenues.
Some say it is not that simple.
"Shortcuts I've tried to take," Orozco said, "it's blocked off. There's really no escaping it."
When it is all done, many people who spend time on campus hope it will be worth it.
"Once this light rail is in," UA employee Kevin Nutter said, "I think that'll make a huge difference."
